Drought makes trees talk

Long-term lack of water is a real killer, even in the forest. Now Swedish scientists have managed to record the sound a tree makes when the water column in the wood tissue of the tree bursts as a result of drought and the tree loses its ability to transport water. The discovery can be used to monitor the state of forests and lays the foundation for an understanding of when and why the phenomenon occurs.
