PEFC certificate

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) — was founded in 1999 to cater for smaller European forest owners and is today the largest umbrella organisation for forest certification, with a presence in more than 50 countries. PEFC's certification system is based on internationally recognized standards and independent third-party certification.
PEFC works for a world where people manage forests sustainably. As the largest forest certification system, PEFC sets the standard for how we ensure a better world for animals, plants and the people who live off forest resources.

The world's largest forest certification system

More than 324 million hectares worldwide are certified to PEFC standards, and over 20,000 companies and organizations are certified under the PEFC traceability system. That equates to 75% of certified forests in the world being certified to PEFC standards, making PEFC the world's largest forest certification system for sustainable forest management.

National forest certification systems based on national conditions

Since forests are diverse and all forests are different when it comes to operations, local and cultural traditions and systems, PEFC has decided that forest certification should be a national concern; a Danish forest needs a forest certification system based on Danish conditions. Therefore, as a global organization, PEFC is based on national members, each of whom can create a forest certification standard that is adapted to the national forests. This means that PEFC Denmark is responsible for ensuring that we in Denmark have a system for sustainable forestry.

PEFC is an approved and recognized eco-label, which is accepted in public and private procurement policies worldwide. It gives consumers confidence that products come from responsibly managed forests. Construction and industry are increasingly demanding, and PEFC is your guarantee of legal and responsible timber

PEFC protects biodiversity, ecosystems and protects the climate by:

  • Forest area and wood resources — for example by using tree species adapted to the Danish climate.
  • Forest health — e.g. by promoting the use of mixed stands and natural growth.
  • Forest production — e.g. by selecting wood species with stable production and varying the choice of tree species.
  • Forest animal and plant life — e.g. by protecting rare species and leaving dead wood for insects.
  • Forest protection of soil and water — for example by limiting tillage and the use of pesticides.
  • The cultural and social values of forests — for example by taking into account past memories and ensuring stable conditions for employees.

Sustainable forest management - is, in short, about forest management being environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically viable for both present and future generations.

Europe's ministers have defined what requirements must be met before forest management can be said to be sustainable.

6 overarching criteria out of:

  • Preserving and increasing forest resources
  • Maintains and enhances the health and vitality of forests
  • Preserves and improves forest production
  • Preserving and improving forest biodiversity
  • Preserves and improves the protective function of forests
  • Preserves other socio-economic functions of forests

These requirements are inscribed in the PEFC standards, so it is secured in PEFC certified forests.
